Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council runs its local crisis help as the Crisis and Resilience Fund. It is a grant — not a loan: help with essentials, nothing to repay. This is a summary; Barnsley’s own page (linked below) is the authority and the current position.

What Barnsley’s scheme covers

Covers: Crisis payments for immediate hardship (food, household items, utilities, priority debt, emergency transport); interest-free credit-union crisis loans; housing payments; heating-oil support; resettlement grants; and Healthy Holidays clubs for children
Status: Active and accepting applications (confirmed 10 September 2026)
Funding period: From 1 April 2026 (replaced the Household Support Fund and Discretionary Housing Payments)

The Household Support Fund, in plain terms

Across England the Household Support Fund has largely been renamed the Crisis and Resilience Fund and now runs to 31 March 2029. It is money central government gives to upper-tier councils to help households with essentials — food, energy, and sometimes white goods. A payment does not affect your benefits. Other help you may qualify for

White-goods grants — a broken fridge, cooker or washing machine.
Budgeting Advance or Budgeting Loan — interest-free from the DWP.
Credit union loans — the cheapest borrowing, capped at 3% a month.
DWP phone numbers — which line to call, and for what.
