No credit check loans: the honest version

A genuine no-credit-check loan from a legitimate UK lender does not exist. What the phrase really means, the red flags, and the cheapest help first.

Searches for a “no credit check loan” are really searches for certainty — a loan you know you will get. But a genuine no-credit-check loan from a legitimate UK lender does not exist: the rules require every lender to check you can afford to repay. What does exist is a lot of expensive credit, and some scams, using those words as bait. Here is the honest version, cheapest first.

Why “no credit check” is a red flag

Under Financial Conduct Authority rules, an authorised lender must assess affordability before lending. A responsible lender may do a “soft search” first (which does not affect your credit file), but it will still check. Anyone advertising "guaranteed approval" or “no credit check” is either breaking the rules, charging the most credit can legally cost, or after your details.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a loan with no credit check at all?

Not from a legitimate UK lender. The rules require an affordability check. Some lenders do a soft search first, which does not mark your file, but they still check.

Are "guaranteed approval" loans real?

No responsible lender can guarantee a loan before checking affordability. Treat those adverts as a warning sign — they tend to be the most expensive credit, or a scam.

What is the cheapest way to borrow on benefits?

An interest-free Budgeting Advance or Budgeting Loan from the DWP, then a credit union loan, which is capped by law at 3% a month.

How do I check a lender is legitimate?

Look them up on the FCA Register, and check whether they are the lender or a broker passing your details on.
