Wirral Council runs its local crisis help as the Crisis and Resilience Fund. It is a grant — not a loan: help with essentials, nothing to repay. This is a summary; Wirral’s own page (linked below) is the authority and the current position.

What Wirral’s scheme covers

Covers: Short-term emergency help with food and basics, gas, electricity or water, clothing and hygiene items, essential furniture, travel, and phone or internet; plus longer-term money, work and housing advice

Before you apply

Who can apply. Anyone aged 16 or over who lives in Wirral, is on a low income and cannot afford essentials — receiving benefits is not required
Use the right route. Complete the online Crisis and Resilience Fund form, or call 0151 606 2005; a separate housing payment applies for people on Housing Benefit or Universal Credit
Check it is still open. Active and accepting applications We confirmed this on 10 September 2026.

The Household Support Fund, in plain terms

Across England the Household Support Fund has largely been renamed the Crisis and Resilience Fund and now runs to 31 March 2029. It is money central government gives to upper-tier councils to help households with essentials — food, energy, and sometimes white goods. A payment does not affect your benefits. Other help you may qualify for

White-goods grants — a broken fridge, cooker or washing machine.
Budgeting Advance or Budgeting Loan — interest-free from the DWP.
Credit union loans — the cheapest borrowing, capped at 3% a month.
DWP phone numbers — which line to call, and for what.
